📖 NIPT

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing — a blood test available from week 10 that screens for chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome by analyzing fetal DNA in the mother's blood.

In Detail

NIPT screens for trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), and sex chromosome abnormalities. It has a 99% detection rate for Down syndrome with a very low false-positive rate. NIPT is a screening test, not diagnostic — abnormal results should be confirmed with amniocentesis or CVS. NIPT can also reveal the baby's sex. It's recommended for all pregnancies but is especially valuable for those over 35 or with risk factors.
