๐Ÿ“– Stillbirth

The death of a baby after 20 weeks of pregnancy but before or during delivery. Stillbirth affects about 1 in 160 pregnancies in the United States.

In Detail

Known causes include placental problems (most common), birth defects, growth restriction, infections, umbilical cord problems, and maternal health conditions. However, in about 25-60% of cases, the cause remains unexplained. Prevention strategies include regular prenatal care, kick counting (monitoring fetal movement), managing health conditions, and sleeping on your side in the third trimester. After a stillbirth, the chance of a subsequent healthy pregnancy is about 90%. Grief support is essential.
