๐Ÿ“– Zygote

The single cell formed when a sperm fertilizes an egg. It contains a complete set of 46 chromosomes (23 from each parent) and is the very first stage of human development.

In Detail

The zygote exists for only about 24-30 hours before its first cell division. During this time, the maternal and paternal DNA combines, determining the baby's genetic makeup โ€” sex, eye color, and thousands of other traits are set at this moment. The zygote then divides into 2 cells, then 4, then 8 (cleavage stage), becoming a morula by day 3-4 and a blastocyst by day 5-6. Each division occurs approximately every 12-20 hours.
