HomeGlossary › Basal Body Temperature

📖 Basal Body Temperature

Your body's lowest resting temperature, taken immediately upon waking before any activity. BBT rises 0.2-0.5°F after ovulation due to progesterone.

In Detail

BBT charting is a natural fertility awareness method. Before ovulation, BBT is typically 96.0-97.5°F. After ovulation, progesterone causes a sustained rise of 0.2-0.5°F that lasts until the next period (or continues if pregnant). A consistent temperature shift confirms ovulation occurred. BBT cannot predict ovulation in advance but confirms it after the fact. Use a basal thermometer accurate to 0.1°F and take readings at the same time daily.
