๐Ÿ“– Follicle

A fluid-filled sac in the ovary that contains a developing egg. Each cycle, several follicles begin growing, but usually only one dominant follicle releases a mature egg.

In Detail

Women are born with about 1-2 million follicles. By puberty, about 300,000-400,000 remain. Each cycle, FSH stimulates 15-20 follicles to begin growing, but typically only one becomes dominant and reaches 18-25mm before rupturing to release the egg (ovulation). In IVF, medications stimulate multiple follicles to grow simultaneously for egg retrieval. Follicle growth is monitored via ultrasound.
