📖 FSH

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone — produced by the pituitary gland, it stimulates follicle growth in the ovaries. FSH levels are used to assess ovarian reserve.

In Detail

FSH rises at the start of each cycle to recruit follicles. As follicles grow and produce estrogen, FSH decreases (negative feedback). High baseline FSH (day 3 testing) — above 10-15 mIU/mL — may indicate diminished ovarian reserve, meaning fewer eggs remain. FSH testing combined with AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) and AFC provides the most complete picture of ovarian reserve. FSH medications are also used in IVF to stimulate multiple follicle development.
