๐ Prolactin
A hormone produced by the pituitary gland, primarily responsible for breast milk production. Elevated prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) can suppress ovulation and cause infertility.
In Detail
Normal prolactin levels in non-pregnant women are under 25 ng/mL. Elevated levels can suppress GnRH, FSH, and LH, preventing ovulation. Causes of high prolactin include breastfeeding, pituitary adenoma (benign tumor), hypothyroidism, certain medications (antipsychotics, antidepressants), and stress. Symptoms include irregular periods, milky nipple discharge, and difficulty conceiving. Treatment typically involves cabergoline or bromocriptine to lower prolactin levels.
