What Is It?
Back pain affects 50-80% of pregnant women. It can range from mild stiffness to severe pain that limits daily activities. Most common in the lower back, it's caused by weight gain, posture changes, and hormonal effects on ligaments.
Common Causes
Weight gain shifting center of gravity, growing uterus stretching abdominal muscles, relaxin hormone loosening joints and ligaments, poor posture, standing for long periods, stress, and pre-existing back conditions.
⚠️ When to See a Doctor
If pain is severe and constant, if accompanied by vaginal bleeding, if you have a fever, if pain radiates down your legs (sciatica), if you experience numbness or tingling, or if back pain is rhythmic (could be contractions).
💡 Tips & Management
Practice good posture. Use a pregnancy support belt. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. Wear supportive, low-heeled shoes. Try prenatal yoga or swimming. Apply heat or cold. Avoid lifting heavy objects. Consider a prenatal massage.
