What Is It?
A missed period means your menstrual cycle didn't arrive when expected. While pregnancy is the most common reason, stress, hormonal imbalances, PCOS, thyroid disorders, excessive exercise, and significant weight changes can also cause missed periods.
Common Causes
Pregnancy (most common), stress and cortisol elevation, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroid/hyperthyroid), sudden weight loss or gain, excessive exercise, breastfeeding, perimenopause, stopping birth control, eating disorders.
⚠️ When to See a Doctor
If you miss 3+ periods in a row, if you have a positive pregnancy test, if accompanied by severe pain, if you experience sudden hair loss or weight changes, or if you're under 45 and periods have stopped.
