Nausea & Morning Sickness

Early Pregnancy

What Is It?

Morning sickness affects 70-80% of pregnant women, typically starting around week 6 and peaking by week 9. Despite its name, nausea can occur at any time of day. It's caused by rapidly rising hCG and estrogen levels.

Common Causes

Rising hCG hormone levels in early pregnancy, heightened sense of smell, estrogen increases, slower digestion, stress and fatigue, low blood sugar, and genetic predisposition.

⚠️ When to See a Doctor

If you can't keep any food or liquid down for 24 hours, if you're losing weight, if urine is very dark (dehydration), if you have a fever, or if vomiting is severe (hyperemesis gravidarum affects 1-3% of pregnancies).

💡 Tips & Management

Eat small, frequent meals. Keep crackers by your bed — eat before getting up. Try ginger tea, ginger candies, or ginger supplements. Vitamin B6 (25mg, 3x daily) is evidence-based for nausea relief. Avoid strong smells. Stay hydrated with small sips. Acupressure wristbands (Sea-Bands) may help.
