What Is It?
Heartburn (acid reflux) affects 17-45% of pregnant women. Progesterone relaxes the valve between the stomach and esophagus, allowing stomach acid to flow upward. As the uterus grows, it pushes the stomach upward, worsening the problem.
Common Causes
Progesterone relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter, growing uterus pushing stomach upward, slower digestion keeping food in the stomach longer, and certain foods (spicy, acidic, fatty).
⚠️ When to See a Doctor
If over-the-counter antacids don't help, if you have difficulty swallowing, if you're losing weight due to inability to eat, if you vomit blood, or if heartburn is severe and constant.
💡 Tips & Management
Eat small, frequent meals. Avoid spicy, acidic, and fatty foods. Don't eat within 2-3 hours of bedtime. Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches. Wear loose-fitting clothes. Try milk or yogurt to neutralize acid. Tums (calcium carbonate) is generally safe — check with your doctor about other antacids.
