Pregnancy Insomnia

Pregnancy

What Is It?

Sleep disturbances affect up to 78% of pregnant women. Causes shift throughout pregnancy — first trimester insomnia is often hormonal, while third trimester insomnia is usually physical (can't find a comfortable position, frequent urination, baby kicks).

Common Causes

Hormonal changes (progesterone), anxiety about pregnancy/parenthood, frequent urination, nausea, heartburn, leg cramps, restless leg syndrome, difficulty finding a comfortable position, baby movements at night, and vivid dreams.

⚠️ When to See a Doctor

If insomnia persists for more than a few weeks, if you have excessive daytime sleepiness affecting safety, if you snore heavily (sleep apnea screening), or if you have restless legs that don't respond to home remedies.

💡 Tips & Management

Establish a calming bedtime routine. Keep the bedroom cool and dark. Use a pregnancy pillow for support. Avoid screens 1 hour before bed. Try warm milk or chamomile tea. Practice deep breathing or meditation. Light exercise during the day promotes better sleep. Don't clock-watch.
