What Is It?
Mittelschmerz is a one-sided lower abdominal pain that occurs around ovulation, affecting about 20% of women. It happens when the follicle ruptures to release the egg. Pain may alternate sides each month depending on which ovary releases the egg.
Common Causes
Follicle growth stretching the ovary surface, follicle rupture releasing the egg, fluid or blood from the ruptured follicle irritating the abdominal lining, and fallopian tube muscle contractions.
⚠️ When to See a Doctor
If pain is severe or debilitating, if it lasts more than 3 days, if accompanied by heavy bleeding, if you have a fever, or if pain occurs at other times in your cycle (not just mid-cycle).
💡 Tips & Management
Use ovulation pain as a natural fertility sign — it indicates you're ovulating! Track pain timing and side in Ovuloom. OTC pain relievers can help. A warm compress may soothe the area. Rest if needed. Consider it a useful body signal for conception timing.
