Postpartum Bleeding (Lochia)

Conditions

What Is It?

Lochia is vaginal bleeding and discharge that occurs after giving birth, whether by vaginal delivery or cesarean section. It consists of blood, mucus, and uterine tissue shedding as your uterus heals. It typically lasts 4-6 weeks.

Common Causes

The uterus shedding its thickened lining after the placenta detaches. This is a normal part of postpartum recovery. The uterus contracts to shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size, expelling the remaining tissue and blood.

⚠️ When to See a Doctor

If you soak through a pad in an hour or less, if bleeding increases (should decrease over time), if you pass clots larger than a golf ball, if lochia has a foul smell (infection), if you have a fever over 100.4°F, or if bleeding suddenly returns after stopping.

💡 Tips & Management

Use maternity pads (no tampons for 6 weeks). Lochia changes color: red (days 1-3), pink/brown (days 4-10), yellowish-white (days 11-42). Rest helps the uterus heal — overdoing activity can increase bleeding. Breastfeeding helps uterine contractions. Track your postpartum recovery in Ovuloom.
