What Is It?
Round ligament pain is a sharp, jabbing pain or ache in the lower belly or groin area during pregnancy. It's most common in the second trimester. The round ligaments support the uterus, and as the uterus grows, these ligaments stretch and thicken, causing pain.
Common Causes
The round ligaments stretching from the uterus to the groin as the uterus enlarges. Quick movements like standing up fast, coughing, laughing, sneezing, rolling over in bed, or exercise can trigger sharp pain as the ligament spasms.
⚠️ When to See a Doctor
If pain is constant and doesn't resolve with rest, if accompanied by fever, bleeding, or chills, if you have pain with urination, if pain is severe, or if you feel more than 4 contractions per hour.
💡 Tips & Management
Move slowly when changing positions. Bend and flex your hips before you cough or sneeze. Try a warm bath or compress. Prenatal yoga can strengthen supporting muscles. Use a pregnancy support belt. Rest when pain occurs — it usually resolves quickly.
