Swollen Feet & Ankles

Pregnancy

What Is It?

Swelling (edema) in feet and ankles is extremely common during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Your body retains extra fluid (up to 6 extra pounds of it), and the growing uterus puts pressure on the veins returning blood from your legs.

Common Causes

Increased blood volume (50% more), fluid retention due to hormonal changes, growing uterus compressing pelvic veins, standing or sitting for long periods, hot weather, high sodium intake, and decreased kidney excretion.

⚠️ When to See a Doctor

If swelling is sudden and severe (preeclampsia warning sign), if only one leg is swollen (blood clot risk), if you have a headache or vision changes with swelling, if face or hands swell suddenly, or if swelling is accompanied by high blood pressure.

💡 Tips & Management

Elevate your feet above heart level several times daily. Wear compression stockings. Stay active — walking improves circulation. Drink plenty of water (paradoxically reduces swelling). Reduce sodium intake. Sleep on your left side. Avoid standing or sitting in one position for too long.
