What Is It?
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that appear most commonly in the legs during pregnancy. They affect up to 40% of pregnant women. The good news: they usually improve or disappear within 3-12 months after delivery.
Common Causes
Increased blood volume (50% more), progesterone relaxing vein walls, growing uterus compressing pelvic veins, gravity pulling blood downward in leg veins, hereditary factors, and prolonged standing.
⚠️ When to See a Doctor
If veins are painful, hard, or warm to touch (could indicate blood clot), if the skin over them changes color, if they bleed, if you develop sores near varicose veins, or if you have sudden leg swelling with pain.
💡 Tips & Management
Elevate your legs whenever possible. Don't cross your legs when sitting. Wear compression stockings (put on before getting out of bed). Exercise regularly — walking and swimming improve circulation. Sleep on your left side to reduce pressure on the inferior vena cava. Avoid standing for long periods.
